Recommendation Letter Criteria and Expectations

In 8th Grade, it is common for students who seek to attend Catholic or private schools to seek scholarships. Key to any scholarship is a recommendation letter from a teacher or school staff member. Below are expectations that Queen of Apostles holds when it comes to a student seeking a recommendation letter.

  • The student, not their parents/guardians, must communicate with their teacher directly and in-person, to foster personal responsibility and accountability.

  • Letters cannot be requested by a student two weeks before a scholarship is due, in order to be respectful of a teacher’s time and schedule.

  • Recommendations are not a guarantee and are given at teacher discretion.

  • The student must provide the following information about the scholarship they are seeking to said teacher: date it is due, the date the student would like their recommendation letter by, the requirements of the letter (i.e. length), how and where the letter should be submitted, and focus the letter should adopt (such as discussion of the leadership or service of the student). See the form below.

  • When asking for a recommendation letter, the student should be respectful and polite in both language and tone.

  • The student must display an admirable and consistent effort in the following areas: academics, school behavior, and treatment of others. Perfection is not required nor expected, however, it is expected that the student strives to be the very best person they can be.
